I think we forgot to listen. Our distant genetic ancestors survived by paying attention constantly to the meaning of ambient sound. Their lives depended on it. Our lives don’t depend on listening. Thinking about it, this has to be where music comes from-from making sense of it. I think if you get back to listening, really intently listening, you’ll find that we can then even still make meaning out of the sound around us. We are always attendees of the concert hall that is forever found in our immediate surroundings. It exists only to the degree that we bring ourselves into it.
